General Skilled Migration (GSM)
The General Skilled Migration Program (“GSM”) Points Tested Stream is for professionals and other skilled migrants who are not sponsored by an employer and who have skills in particular occupations required in Australia.
These occupations are listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL).
There are a number of options for GSM applicants including:
- skilled independent applicants
- skilled applicants nominated by a State or Territory government
Skilled Nominated - Subclass 190 Visa
Subclass 190 is a permanent residence visa for applicants who may not meet Skilled Independent requirements but have skills in demand for the Australian labour market.
Applicants must be nominated by a participating State or Territory government. Applicants must pass a points test with a pass mark of 65.
Applicants applying for the Skilled Nominated visa must nominate an occupation listed Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). This is subject to the occupation also being on the relevant State or Territory government list.
Nomination by a State or Territory government requires applicants to honour Nomination obligations.
Expression of Interest
To be able to apply for the Subclass 190 Visa the applicant must first submit an expression of interest (EOI) with the Department of Home Affairs and be invited by the Department to apply.
